End of the Year IXL Fun

End of the Year IXL Fun

So, the end of the year has come, and my students have worked hard…*real* hard on all of the Oregon Core Skills via IXL. Each week during our lab time, and for homework nightly, students have put in a lot of time and energy on the hundreds of skills on the site. Today, was a day of celebration. No the class didn’t meet the 80% mark in each of the 5 standards strand, but they did amazingly given the transition…

External Goal Setting in IXL

External Goal Setting in IXL

Sometimes you just have to set up external rewards for students.  There are many people who don’t believe rewards should be given to students, they feel that a student should be intrinsically rewarded for their learning.  I agree that as students mature the intrinsic rewards of learning need to grow, but there are just times where a good external pizza party reward has a place. That’s what we all agreed on this past year, a party to celebrate our hard…

The Big Switch in IXL for My Class

The Big Switch in IXL for My Class

This year I realized that my students still were not working up to their potential using IXL.  So, I decided to turn the program on it’s head and try something that would push my comfort level to it’s limits.  I turned the learning over to my students.  I made them absolutely responsible for their own outcomes, and acted as a “guide on the side”, rather than the “sage on the stage” (to use Alison King’s wonderful analogy). Using the clear…

IXL Math Targets Create Individualized Learners

IXL Math Targets Create Individualized Learners

The learning experts all agree, which is sometimes are rare feat in educatio, students need to know the learning targets that they are aiming for.  Robert Marzano states, “Students who can identify what they are learning significantly outscore those who cannot.” With this in mind, I set forth to help students know the expectations that our state has set as their targets in math.  This requires a lot of patience, and a dedication to letting students have time to digest…

Is IXL Aligned with Common Core Curriculum Standards (CCCS)?

Is IXL Aligned with Common Core Curriculum Standards (CCCS)?

Yes, IXL has been programmed and setup for the new Common Core Curriculum Standards (CCCS).  For our state, Oregon, which is moving to the new standards in 2012-13, IXL has had both the 2007 State Standards and the CCCS available in their Standards report. This report will show the teacher how well your students are doing with practice in each of the standards areas.  In order for you to see this report you will: 1. Click on Reports 2. Click…

Setting up small groups for Math with IXL

Setting up small groups for Math with IXL

IXL has a wonderful reports section that I often wonder how many teachers use to its fullest extent.  Here’s one of the first ways that I used an IXL report, and it now saves me a lot of time making small groups for students who need additional math support. Let’s say you’ve taught your lesson, and you’re lucky enough to have the chance to use IXL after you’re lesson is done.  Your students all head into the lab and are…

An introduction to IXL

An introduction to IXL

IXL is a web site dedicated to the practice and learning of math from pre-school all the way through algebra.  It is an amazing web site that I have used for the past three years with my classes of 4th and 5th grade students. When I first was shown this web site by a collegue I was struck by how many different skills the site included for each grade level.  I instantly wanted to be a part of it.  Luckily,…
