Hello there and welcome to my technology blog. My name is Michael Stephens, and I have been teaching intermediate (4th and 5th grade) elementary students for the past 8 years. Prior to becoming a teacher, I worked as the manager of a web site design company for 10 years. The knowledge that I gathered from that time in my life has helped me infuse technology into my classroom and my lessons.
So, after attending night classes and eventually resigning my position so that I could do my full time student teaching, I was lucky enough to be hired for my dream job. I had always wanted to be a teacher, I had just decided to put it on hold for a while.
When I first entered the classroom, I would have ideas of how to bring in new technological ideas. A web site for my classroom. Movie making with the students as the actors, writers and directors. Web design classes for my students. It has only been 8 years, but I am just now beginning to see just how much technology can be utilized with my students.
I don’t believe I have all of the answers, or know everything there is to know. But, I’d like to attempt to share what I have tried so far, and hopefully I can share my successes along with my failures. And yes, there have been many. But that’s good teaching, when we learn from our mistakes.
For a lot of teachers, technology becomes something that is dropped in our laps and told, “here, use this in your class lessons.” It can be very difficult to adapt to having a new piece of technology. So much so that many times I have seen a new piece of equipment simply put to the side until time allows us to learn about it. And we all know how much time we have to put toward learning about new technology.
So, I created this blog, maybe a few people will stumble upon it and it will help them. I have been asked by many colleagues to help them with new ideas, so I thought this would be a good place to collect my thoughts and hopefully others will share their thoughts and ideas too.
